Being green can be really simple. There are actually many ways that you can do your part by practising the 3 'R' s, namely reducing, reusing and recycling. Here are a few easy tips to get you started!
- When you use paper, be sure to use both sides. If you print documents, print double-sided.
- You can convert kitchen waste to compost if you have a garden.
- Buy refillable pens when possible. Also, you might like to buy pens made out of recycled materials e.g. Pilot's BeGreen range, etc.
- Save the plastic bags you get from the supermarket to store rubbish in, or to reuse next time. (You can store them in a container.)
- Sell all your used home appliances, old furniture and old newspapers (there is a lot) to the rag-and-bone man when he is around your estate.
- Use reusable bags or reuse the plastic bags you have at home when shopping, especially if your goods are heavy. Try not to use the plastic bags provided by the supermarket if possible.
- Return empty printer cartridges to the service centre.
- Give away old clothes, toys and books to the Salvation Army.
- Buy local vegetables instead of imported vegetables. This saves on fuel as the vegetables are transported a shorter distance.
- Do not let your car engine idle for more than two minutes.
- Switch off your airconditioner and use the fan whenever possible, or if you really cannot stand the heat, up the air-conditioner temperature to anything from 23 degrees to 25 degrees.(you can save money too)
These are just eleven ways you can contribute towards fighting Global Warming. We are sure you will be able to find more ways to go green. Just stop and look around you and try to spot ways in which you can be more environmentally-friendly.
